Do you know the difference between proactive and reactive PR?

I’m a fan and practice a combination of these two, but I’ve seen some “publicists” only be reactive and claim that’s PR.

Reactive PR is when you reply to requests from journalists, freelancers and the media. It’s great to be able to see what the media is working on and even better when your client is a great fit, but that also means you are waiting around for these opportunities to arise and not creating them for your client.

Proactive PR is what I do and always have done. It’s creating pitches and opportunities for my clients when there isn’t currently one in existence. It’s taking a client’s expertise, message or story and sending it to the right person and showing them why they need to feature a piece on my client. It’s being specific as to what outlet we want and what angle we want to pitch.

I recommend a combination approach for your PR strategy, so you can still land interviews, while waiting for the organic pitches to take shape. Yes, there’s a higher premium for proactive PR, but that’s where you’re going to see your results!

Podcasts are great because they have longevity. Once published, an episode is in the world for all to see. You can utilize show notes for a blog post and now there’s traffic to your website, showcase it on social media...it’s not just on one podcasting platform and it’s not going to disappear overnight!⁠⠀

How are you looking for podcasts to be a guest on? Are you in Facebook groups that are specifically for podcasts looking for guests? ⁠

I'm in them, but I think if your goal is to not only be interviewed on podcasts but to grow your audience and authority through podcasts, then you need to be doing a lot more. ⁠

The best way to gain authority AND visibility is by landing podcast interviews where your ideal client is listening, not just on shows for the sake of being able to say you were interviewed. ⁠

Researching podcasts and finding those that are a good fit takes time, but in the end it's so worth it. This is a service I offer my clients and why I'm known as the podcast matchmaker!⁠

I don't just search for podcasts on Apple...I use multiple platforms and forms of research to find the exact right ones.⁠
